Head Lice Treatment for Girls

Did you know…That children are more likely to get head lice than adults?

Did you know…That among children, girls are more likely to get head lice than boys?

Now girls might wonder why they have to face such discrimination.

Well, there are several reasons why girls tend to attract head lice more than boys. Let’s discuss them now.

  • First of all, girls like to hug a lot. So, those with long flowing hair can easily attract head lice. As I have told you in an earlier post that head lice can’t fly or jump. Thus, when you make contact with infested hair, you are likely to get head lice too.
  • Secondly, girls like to share their dresses or scarves too. So, if a dress or scarf has been infested and after it’s worn by another girl, then that girl will get head lice too.
  • Last but not least, girls share their combs, brushes and hair bands too. They also cause head lice to move from one host to another.

Remember, it is much harder to treat long hair. This is why girls with long hair return, after head lice treatment, with shorter hair.

Now…We have discussed how girls are more likely to get head lice than boys. Let’s now talk about head lice treatment for girls.

There are 3 common types of head lice treatments for girls:

  • Nit Comb
  • Head Lice Shampoo
  • Home Remedies

1. Nit Comb

Head lice eggs are called ‘nits’. They can be found close to your scalp. Using a fine-toothed head lice comb, nits can be removed from a girl’s hair. Remember, it’s a time consuming job and you should be well-prepared to spend at least half an hour. It’s not really easy to comb long hair with nit comb. However, using a nit comb is an excellent head lice treatment for girls.

2. Head Lice Shampoo

If you don’t get rid of all the nits, then in a matter days, your head will be filled with head lice again. Now there are a lot of head lice shampoos available that you can use for head lice treatment for girls. The problem is that your skin might be allergic to some over the counter shampoos. This is why it’s always advisable to check with your pharmacist first. However, remember, nit comb is the safest way to remove head lice and nits from anyone’s head.

3. Home Remedies

Home remedies like Cooking Oil, Vaseline, Mayonnaise and Olive Oil are famous for suffocating head lice. Apply Vaseline or mayo to your hair, then cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it like that for around 8 hours. However, this is not a scientifically proven method. There is no evidence that it will work. But, all these things, i.e. Vaseline, mayo, etc. are known to be effective. One thing is for sure though, i.e. they will make your hair really messy. It will take you several days to take Vaseline or mayo out of your hair.

You may pick any method that you like for head lice treatment for girls. Also, avoid sharing combs, brushes, hair bands, clothing, etc. to prevent yourself from getting head lice from others.
